At the Show - Display Cases
Cortland and Virginia Doan, The Cortland Cases, have been dealers at Good Sam for more than 9 years and are avid miniaturists. Their 1:12 scale display cases come with a unique Interchangeable Insert. Additional blank Inserts may be purchased to create more scenes to be used in a case. At the Show - Exhibits
This week's exhibits focus on a bit of unique Americana. We share a room box inspired by Mary Engelbriet's distinctive illustrations. It is imbued with spirited wit and nostalgic warmth. The second exhibit harkens back to the 1950s. We are reminded of the many popular record hits by performers from that era.
"Life is Just a Chair of Bowlies" is 1:12 scale and was designed by Kathleen Stats, Vallejo, California and exhibited at the 2009 Good Sam Show. She told us at the time, "My husband Terry gifted me with two unpainted hutches which I finished in the Engelbreit style. The chair on the right is actually a Christmas ornament." This clever 1950s soda fountain/diner scene is in a vintage (or reproduction) coin-operated countertop Select-O-Matic. Many of these models graced diner booths, counters and bars across the United States in the 1950s. Customers could select songs from the jukebox for a quarter. Photographed by Connie Sauve at the 2011 Good Sam Show. The exhibitor's name is unknown.

Workshops scheduled for the 2012 Good Sam Show
By way of update, this year's show is scheduled for October 6th and 7th at the Doubletree Hotel San Jose, Bayshore Ballroom. We will have 116 sales tables including 15 international dealers. New dealers include Maria Santos from Spain, Takumi Takanashi from Japan, and Natasha from New York.
There are eleven Friday workshops scheduled this year at the Hotel. The variety of the offerings is outstanding with exceptional teachers coming from all over the country. Eight workshops are in 1:12 scale, one is in 1/2" scale, and two are in 1/4" scale. The classes are held at the hotel. After the show, the three special classes listed below will be held in Morgan Hill. Go to Good Sam "Featured Workshops" for details and registration information.
Class #1 - 1/4" scale. Debbie Young teaches "Trinity Circle" a Martha's Vineyard Campground Cottage. Oct 8 & 9.
Class #2 - 1" and/or 1/2" scale. Craig Roberts (The Harry Potter) teaches miniature wheel thrown pottery. Oct. 8, 9, 10.
Class #3 - 1" scale. The Guys from Texas teach "Teahouse of the Paper Moon", an authentic Japanese Tea House. Truly a masterpiece. Oct. 8, 9, 10.

At the Show - 18th & 19th century American Furniture and Folk Art
An IGMA Fellow, Mark Murphy specializes in 1:12 scale 18th and 19th century American country and American Arts & Crafts furniture. He also makes 19th to early 20th century Japanese furniture, and has a special fondness for tea cabinets and accessory pieces. His work is on display in several miniature museums. Gloria Kent "Memories" has been a dealer at Good Sam for the last six years. She began making 1:12 scale miniatures about ten years ago. From the 2009 Good Sam Show, this exhibit is an totally delightful porch filled with potted plants, baskets, tools, and much more. Filled with personality, it reflects a lifelong commitment to gardening and is clearly a much loved extension of the house. The exhibitor's name is unknown.
The scene "For the Birds" was created by Connie Sauve. She is a long-time miniaturist, doll maker, and IGMA Fellow. Connie had an idea for turning a real, full-sized birdhouse into a miniature birdhouse shop. Her father built the birdhouse from old barn wood. You will find several more photos on her website, information on painting and aging the birdhouse, and a Brick Tutorial. She also provides information as to the artisans whose work is displayed in the shop, and more. Look under My Miniatures at www.thechinadoll.com.
