This week's exhibit from the 2009 Good Sam Show is the Seed and Feed Shed by Sharon Reeve, San Mateo, CA. Inspired by a 1994 Kim Jacobs calendar illustration, Sharon fondly remember time spent in her mother's Victory Garden in WW II. This vignette holds special memories for Sharon of simple pleasures from a simpler time.

In a post on January 7, 2012, we announced that Pat Carter, Good Sam Show Committee, died on January 5, 2012. She had been in charge of the highly successful White Elephant Sale for many years.

The family has made the decision to part with Pat's huge miniature collection. A three-day Estate Sale is scheduled for March 24, 25, 26 (Saturday, Sunday, and Monday) from 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM at Shellie's Miniature Mania, 732 Laurel Street San Carlos, CA 94070, 650-593-4921, shelliesminis@msn.com, www.shelliesminis.com

An avid collector, Pat's collection contains saloons, general stores, Southwestern scenes, kitchens, and room boxes of all sizes. She had many shadow boxes and scenes--some from Brooke Tucker classes. There is an extensive collection of furniture, dolls--most of which are handmade, tons of accessories, and so much more.

Pat had a miniature store at one time and a miniature club in Eureka. She had good taste and bought nice collector pieces plus made up some class boxes. Everything is very well done.

Josephine "Jo" Meyer attended Good Sam for the first time in 2007. She hand paints lovely scenes and landscapes on 1:12 scale furniture. Her oil paintings include originals, reproductions of famous Masters, and whimsical paintings substituting a dog or cat for the human subject. She also paints in 1/2" and 1/4" scale.

Occasionally, Fern Vasi and Jo Meyer exchange ideas and collaborate on an inventive and exciting project utilizing their respective skills. The combination of Fern's artist dolls and Jo's oil paintings makes for delightful and innovative 1:12 scale scenes. At the 2011 Good Sam Show, Carolynn Walden displayed her "Piccadilly Masquerade" shop. The one-of-a-kind handcrafted costumes and masks that Carolynn made were inspired by photos taken during the 2009 Carnival in Venice. Our show photographer, Michael Puff, took a large number of photos to support an article submitted to American Miniaturist magazine. Published in March 2012 (Issue #107), Carolyn's 1:12 scale shop is featured on the cover.

For awhile now, the Teppers have been making Rustic European and Extravagant Castle Furnishings. The pieces have an old world warm and charm that continues to be popular with collectors. To compliment this line, Brian creates original miniature oil paintings on canvas with an emphasis on sailing ships and chickens (roosters and hens). These paintings add considerable charm when integrated into a scene.

Quarter-scale or 1:48 is a popular choice for exhibitors at the Good Sam Show. In this scale, 1/4-inch equals a foot (12 inches) in real life. The scale is surprisingly easy to work in with a satisfying amount of detail. Each year, Good Sam offers some one-day quarter-scale workshops by extraordinarily talented artisans.

The quarter-scale Art Deco Hotel shown here was created from a Quarter Connection Miniature Club workshop kit by Lisa Holm, Vacaville, CA. An on-line group, the Quarter Connection provides a place for dollhouse miniaturists to share their love of quarter-scale dollhouse miniatures with like minded others.

This typical Shotgun house was made by Marjorie Milani, Mini Attics group, in quarter-scale. A small narrow rectangular residence, one room leads into the next without hallways. Most were built from the end of the Civil War (1865) to the 1920s.

One of this week's exhibits from past Good Sam Shows makes imaginative use of stuffed toy bears. The other exhibit uses frogs (amphibian animals) in a most enchanting way.

Always innovative, long-time dealer IGMA Fellow Barbara Stanton recently introduced 1:12 scale miniature dollhouse jigsaw puzzles with images of her paintings. "Castles and Cottages" is a two-sided 1:12 scale exhibit by Mary Fish, Pleasanton, CA from the 2009 Good Sam Show. It makes use of two anthropomorphic cats in a very clever way. The Gentleman Cat and Lady Cat were purchased at the 2008 NAME National Convention along with the Castle and Cottage walls and tables by Robin Betterley.

This week we are featuring some of the food artisans who attend the Good Sam Show. These amazing creations look good enough to eat--but they wouldn't make much of a mouthful.

Laura Crain, Dollhouse Land, LauraCrain2@aol.com, began designing miniature foods and flowers at age 15--more than thirty years ago. She owns and works full-time in her silk flower store in San Juan Capistrano, CA. Laura has attended Good Sam the last four years.

I am very sad to tell you that Pat Carter, Good Sam Show Committee, died January 5, 2012. She had many abdominal surgeries with mixed results, and did not make it through her most recent surgery.

When Good Sam first started the White Elephant Sale, whoever was available at "Grand Central Station" helped price and sell what had been donated. Sometimes it was a bit chaotic. It certainly was not organized. Pat was there at Grand Central, just hanging out and helping where she could. Slowly but surely, she began to concentrate on the White Elephant Sale, and she did it so well. It became her baby. In recent years we have made from $1,000 to $2,000 on the sales between her expertise and the generous donations of miniaturists.

Pat had a miniature store at one time and a miniature club in Eureka. She was a fount of knowledge about miniatures. In recent times Pat has written a column for the NAME Gazette.

At Pat's request there will be no services.

I will miss her ready smile and calm demeanor. Pat was a special person.

As we ring in 2012, Good Sam is proud to introduce its new blog. In our first posts of the year, we will bring you photo highlights from the October 2011 Good Sam Showcase of Miniatures.

Here we will be regularly posting updates about the upcoming 2012 show scheduled for October 6 and 7 at the Doubletree Hotel, San Jose, CA. Please join us and keep yourself informed.

Thirty-six years ago--in 1976--the ladies of the Good Samaritan Hospital League added a new fundraiser based on some members’ love of miniatures. They put on a display (no sales) of miniatures at a local community center and asked for donations at the door. They called it the Showcase of Miniatures and, over the years, it has become commonly known as the Good Sam Show. The 1977 show was also only displays. Then, in 1978, a few dealers were invited to attend and the show grew from there.

We are very proud of our display area and that it has stayed vibrant over the past 36 years. We welcome exhibits, new or from the past, and are eager for participation from first time exhibitors. More information can be found on our website.

Each week, we will share an exhibit or exhibits with you from a recent Good Sam Show.

Bliss Street is a row of six quarter-scale replica Bliss houses, landscaping and accessories. Each house is an exact replica of an authentic Bliss house produced in Rhode Island in the early 1900s. Exhibit in 2011 by Cynthia Howe.
